Yishi Zhao is a violist and joyful collaborator of chamber music. Her repertoire is versatile, having worked in formations from solo through to nonet. She plays music from as early as the Baroque Era all the way to pieces written as recent as 2019.
Initially a violinist, an instrument on which she won the National Competition for the performance of Chinese works in 2006, she later went on to study viola with Professor Jia Jiangtao at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. After completing her studies, she moved to Germany to continue studying under Karin Wolf at the Musikakademie Stadt Kassel and Veit Hertenstein at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, where she graduated with a Masters in 2019.
Her experience as a chamber musician is diverse. She has played in traditional ensembles, but also in less ordinary combinations, such as in a viola/oboe/piano trio, in which she was a prizewinner at the Peredur Chamber Competition in 2015. Together with a guitarist, she gave the world premiere of Samuel Cho's "Traveler, My Name", in Kassel in 2017.
Yishi lives in Saarbrücken, Germany.
